Your Chicago Change-of-Address Checklist for 2027

Two deadlines in this checklist are legally enforced, and everything else is housekeeping. Illinois gives you 10 days to notify the Secretary of State of a new address. Chicago gives you 30 days from move-in to buy a city vehicle sticker. Miss either and you are looking at a ticket or a late fee, not a reminder email.
The rest is sequencing. Do USPS first, because the confirmation it sends you is accepted as proof of address at the City Clerk, which saves you a second trip.
| Task | Deadline | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Driver’s license or state ID address | 10 days from the move | Online at the Secretary of State |
| Vehicle registration address | 10 days, submitted separately | Online at the Secretary of State |
| Chicago city vehicle sticker | 30 days from move-in | Office of the City Clerk |
| Residential zone parking on your sticker | Before you park on a zoned street | City Clerk office, in person only |
| Voter registration transfer | January 26, 2027 for regular registration | Chicago Board of Election Commissioners |
| USPS forwarding | Submit about 2 weeks out | usps.com or any Post Office |
Everything below expands on those rows, in the order that causes the least backtracking.
File the change of address with USPS about two weeks before you move. Forwarding can begin within 3 business days of your request, but the Postal Service advises allowing up to 2 weeks, and mail arrives at the new address piece by piece rather than in a batch.
Online costs $1.25, an identity verification fee charged to a credit or debit card whose billing address matches either your old or new address. In person at a Post Office it is free: bring photo ID, ask for the Mover’s Guide packet, and fill out PS Form 3575. Any website charging you more than $1.25 for this is not USPS.
What gets forwarded is narrower than people assume. First-Class mail and periodicals move free, as do Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage. Media Mail is forwarded only if you pay the shipping from your local Post Office. USPS Marketing Mail is not forwarded at all.
Standard forwarding runs 12 months. You can pay to extend it by 6, 12, or 18 additional months, with 18 being the maximum and no refunds once purchased. When the forwarding period ends, USPS returns your mail to senders for 6 months with a label showing your new address, which is a useful backstop and a terrible long-term plan.
The Postal Service is explicit that this order only changes your address with the Post Office. Government agencies and companies are still on you.
By law, you must notify the Secretary of State within 10 days of changing your address. The online address change is free.
The detail that catches people: your driver’s license file and your vehicle registration file are separate systems, and you have to submit the change to both. Doing one does not do the other. If you have two cars, each registration gets updated.
Submitting online updates your record, not the plastic in your wallet. You must visit a Driver Services facility before your license expires to get a card showing the new address. CDL holders have a tighter rule: notify within 10 days and obtain a corrected hard card within 30.
If you are a new Illinois resident rather than moving within the state, the license and registration process is different and worth reading through before you queue up at a facility.
Every Chicago resident with a vehicle needs a city vehicle sticker, including people whose cars are registered at an address outside city limits. New residents have 30 days from move-in to buy and display one. After that window, a late fee gets added to the sticker price along with possible prorated back charges.
Moving within Chicago usually doesn’t require a new sticker, but it does require updating the address on your City Clerk record. You can do this online with proof of address, and the accepted documents are specific: a mortgage statement, a property tax bill within 12 months, a utility bill within 30 days, a landline phone bill, a cable or satellite bill, or your USPS change-of-address confirmation. That’s why you should file with USPS first.
Zone parking is the part you can’t do from your couch. Adding or changing a Residential Permit Parking Zone on your city sticker must happen in person at the Office of the City Clerk, and you need to bring your current sticker plus proof of the new address.
This matters a great deal if you are moving between zoned streets. A Lake View permit is useless on a zoned block in Wicker Park, because the zone number on your sticker has to match the number posted on the street signs. Plan the Clerk visit for the week you move, not the month after, and use guest passes in the meantime if your new block requires a permit.
Chicago’s municipal election is Tuesday, February 23, 2027, with a runoff on April 6, 2027 if no candidate clears a majority. Mayor, City Council, City Clerk, and City Treasurer are all on that ballot, which means your ward matters and your ward follows your address.
Regular registration and address transfers close 28 days before the election, on January 26, 2027. After that, grace period registration takes over. Online grace-period registration through the state runs until February 7, 2027, and in-person grace-period registration with same-visit voting continues at designated sites through Election Day.
If you file an address change in person during that grace period, bring two forms of ID with at least one showing your current address, and be prepared to vote during that same visit. Check your precinct and polling place at chicagoelections.gov after the change goes through, since a move of six blocks can put you in a different precinct and occasionally a different ward.
Utilities come first because they are date-sensitive. ComEd and Peoples Gas transfers should be scheduled for the day of your move, with the old account ending the day after, so you are not unloading a truck in the dark or paying for someone else’s furnace.
Then work through the accounts that carry money or legal weight: bank and credit cards, auto and renters insurance, employer payroll and HR records, the IRS and the Illinois Department of Revenue, your pharmacy, your doctor, and any subscription that ships you a physical object. Update renters insurance before move day, not after, because coverage follows the address on the policy.
Building paperwork runs on its own clock. Your new building will want a certificate of insurance from your mover before it releases the freight elevator, and that document has to name the right legal entity. Our explainer on certificates of insurance for Chicago buildings covers what management is actually checking. If your truck needs reserved curb space, the CDOT parking permit is filed by the moving company and costs $25.
One last item people forget in a Gold Coast or downtown building: package delivery defaults. Update the address on every retailer account you use before your first order ships to a doorman who no longer knows your name.
You have ten days to update your Illinois driver’s license, state ID, and vehicle registration, which is a legal requirement. You have 30 days from move-in to buy a city vehicle sticker if you are new to Chicago. USPS forwarding has no deadline, but file it roughly two weeks ahead so mail starts arriving on time.
No. USPS states plainly that a change-of-address order only updates your address with the Post Office. Government agencies, banks, insurers, and retailers must be updated separately. The Secretary of State, the City Clerk, and the Board of Elections each maintain their own records, and none of them hear from USPS.
Online it is $1.25, charged as an identity verification fee to a card whose billing address matches your old or new address. In person at a Post Office, it is free with acceptable photo ID. Third-party sites charging $40 or more for this are not affiliated with the Postal Service.
No. Adding or changing a Residential Permit Parking Zone on your city sticker has to be done at an Office of the City Clerk in person, with your current sticker and proof of your new address. The zone number on your sticker must match the number on the signs posted on your block.
You need to transfer your registration to the new address, which also updates your precinct and possibly your ward. For the February 23, 2027 municipal election, regular transfers close January 26, 2027, with grace period registration available after that, online through February 7 and in person through Election Day.
Twelve months on standard forwarding. You can buy extensions of 6, 12, or 18 more months, capped at 18 and non-refundable. After forwarding ends, USPS returns mail to senders for 6 months with a label carrying your new address, which gives you a grace window but is not a substitute for updating accounts directly.
Work backward from your date. USPS about two weeks out, utilities scheduled for the day itself, Secretary of State within 10 days after, City Clerk within 30, and the voter registration transfer whenever it lands relative to January 26.
