When moving, most people take into consideration the size and shape of the boxes they use as well as how to make sure everything packed in those boxes will be free of damage. However, one overlooked aspect of packing for a move is materials used to pack up those goods, specifically weather resistant packing materials.
Weather resistant packing materials come in many shapes and sizes but they all serve the same purpose – to make sure the items inside stay free of damage from water, snow, and even high winds. While this might seem like a minor issue if you are just moving across the street or a few blocks away but if you are moving to a new town or making a long distance move, ensuring your boxes are ready for any potential foul weather can help mitigate damage, mold, and generally will make unpacking that much easier.
Plastic Wraps and Films
The most common type of weather resistant packing material are plastic wraps and plastic film. Whether its shrink wrap, stretch wrap, or other types of plastic wraps, these materials fully enclose the package and make it difficult for water to enter. This type of wrap is also commonly used to add additional protection to electronics and other items that are particularly sensitive to water damage.
Additionally, plastic wrap can also help secure boxes and can help add extra protection against the wind. This is ideal for those who are moving but may not be using a professional mover.
Hard Cases and Plastic Tubs
Plastic totes and tubs tend to be pretty durable. They can withstand damage and usually do a good job keeping the items inside safe from damage. These options tend to be superior when compared to cardboard. However, these boxes tend to be more expensive but also come with the added benefit of additional storage and reusability.
The biggest advantage of a plastic tub is they tend to be weather resistant. While not entirely water tight, they also have the benefit of being resistant. Water can not easily penetrate plastic and depending on the design, water may not even be able to get into the plastic tun easily. However, not all tubs are created equal. Some are thicker and have better designed lids than competitor products. Always make certain the tub you are using is of a high quality and it never hurts to double up your protection by adding plastic wrap to your hard cases and plastic tubs.
Weather Resistant Foam and Tapes
Closed cell foam and foam rollers keep humidity out of a storage container and can keep valuables and textile dry while on the move. While not as popular as plastic tubs, foam rolls are a cost effective and easy way to make certain the materials inside a container are protected from anything that might find its way inside.
Sealants are another underutilized material that can help with water proofing a package for a move. While duct tape is a popular option, there are other materials that are specifically designed for moving and can come in at a cheaper price and offer better protection. However, tapes should be used sparingly as wrapping items in tape can result in longer unpacking times. Additionally, tapes are likely only good for usage on exteriors of packing materials and should not be used directly on goods like electronics.
